Uterine Fibroids – “Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that are made up of the muscle and connective tissue from the wall of the uterus.” (The Cleveland Clinic, 2020)
Symptoms vary based on size, location, and number of fibroids and can include: low red blood cell count (anemia), excessive and/or prolonged bleeding, irregular bleeding, chronic fatigue, bladder issues, pelvic pain, back and leg pain, etc.
July is Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month and for me IT’S PERSONAL.
As I approach the 10 year anniversary of being initially diagnosed with uterine fibroids and having my myomectomy surgery, I’m motivated to use whatever platform I have to raise awareness and promote universal understanding of uterine fibroids.

I know the uterine fibroid fight well and I understand the mental and physical challenges that come along with them. Now that I am battling them for the second time, I find myself asking “God, where’s my healing? Haven’t I suffered enough? Why am I being punished in this way?”
But then this scripture comes to mind:
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. — 2 Corinthians 12: 8-10
I remind myself that God is all knowing and all powerful. If He permitted this health issue, it is for a reason and He will see me through it.
Take in these facts about fibroids and please share with others:
- Black women are 2-3x more likely to be diagnosed with uterine fibroids
- 41% of women see at least two healthcare providers before an accurate diagnosis of uterine fibroids
- 43% of women with fibroids say they decrease their physical activity most of the time due to severity of symptoms
- 30% of women with fibroids say that fibroid symptoms interfere with social activity most or all of the time
- On average, women wait 3.6 years before seeking treatment for fibroids
Wow! These facts are discouraging buuuuuuuuutttt, there’s hope. GOOD NEWS (ya’ll know about good news).
There are things that we with uterine fibroids CAN control.
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
We CAN control:
- what we eat
- our exercise habits
- sleep hygiene
- stress management
- who we select as our doctors
- doctor recommendations we follow
- our support system
- our spiritual fitness
So remember, even if you have uterine fibroids, you are NOT helpless. All of these above things are within our control and will help your mental, physical, and emotional well being as you navigate with this diagnose.
FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL.
I pray a special prayer for my sister battling with this diagnosis right now. May you be comforted, informed, and uplifted.
And if you need a community, connect to The White Dress Project on Facebook and Instagram and know you are not in this fight alone.
Love y’all! Stay LIFTED!
Remember God does not heal everyone physical, I understand the pain of not being healed with a daughter who is chronically ill and who is about to have surgery to have a tumor and one of her adrenal gland remove, (the tumor has cancer cells) My prayer for me is Lord give my daughter the strength to go through all of this and to bring glory to your kingdom. I will keep you in my prayers

I am battling fibroids. I have been debating having the surgery for almost a year now. I am seriously thinking about having the surgery because the pain is soo bad. I am a little nervous about the surgery that is why I have been procrastinating. Thanks for sharing your story and the scriptures.
