5 Types of People to Unfollow On Social Media

Did you know that you can “unfollow” someone on Facebook yet still be “friends” with them?  Did you know that they will never know if you do this?

Whew! I don’t know about ya’ll– but this has been an absolute game changer for me on my Christian walk. Instead of taking long “breaks” from social media, I gave this method of “unfollowing” people a try and let me tell you—– my life instantly got better when my I did some cleaning/tidying up of my social media accounts.

 

Research shows that the average person spends an average of two hours per day on social media. Wow! 2 HOURS??! That’s a lot of information being presented to us and Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to guard our hearts.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23

 

My timeline is so much more pleasant now that I’ve decided to “unfollow” these 5 types of people on social media:

1. The complainer
2. The bragger
3. The gossiper
4. The great debater
5. The nudist

 

The complainer. The complainer does just that— complain. All the time. About everything. Their job, their kids, their car, the weather—-nothing satisfies them. And they broadcast to the entire world when they are having a bad day– which is often. This type of complaining on your newsfeed/timeline can have a negative impact on you without even knowing it. Psalms 100: 4 tells us to “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise.” This is hard to do when we are surrounded by people who only focus on the bad in life– not the good.

 

The bragger. The bragger is boastful. They are flashy. They want you to know that they have this new handbag, new car, best relationship, most money. They may even want you to know every second of their amazing, expensive vacation. There’s nothing wrong with posting stuff like this but if you follow someone who ONLY does this or does this ALL the time, there may be a concern.

 Proud and boastful people will be shamed, but wisdom stays with those who are modest and humble. — Proverbs 11:2

 

The gossiper. Whew, not only does the gossiper know all the tea— they spill it too!  Every other social media post is about another’s person business. *sigh I wrote a whole blog post about what the Bible says about gossiping. The great debater. How is it that a person wants to argue about any and everything? How SWAY?  We all know this person. They post something just to get a reaction– just to start conflict. They love tension. They love the back and forth. Conflict interests them and they want to see more of it. If you’re like me and you try to avoid conflict like the plague, this might be a good person to “unfollow” on social media.

 

The nudist. I really don’t know how else to describe this type of person. They don’t wear many clothes (male or female). Hey, no judgement if you like minimal clothing. It’s just that I don’t want a picture of you half naked/naked to be the first thing I see when I open Facebook or Instagram on my lunch break. Therefore, please know we can be friends but I probably no longer “follow” you.  Big hugs though! 🙂 with your clothes on.

I’m gonna go back to Proverbs 4:23 here because I think the instructions are so clear. God wants us to GUARD OUR HEARTS. This means that we have to be careful what we watch, what we listen to, and who we allow close to us. We can be influenced subconsciously. Stop thinking that you are above influence. You’re not. Our eyes and our ears are gates, people. GATES.

You may be called lame. You may be called bougie, stuck up, a square. Whatever. But remember, they talked about Jesus too.

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you– John 15:18-19
