I Found My New Church on Instagram

“You did what?”

Yes, you read the title correctly. I really did find my new church home on Instagram. In a digital age where you can find almost anything you want on the internet, why NOT use social media to lead you to a faith based community?

It all started with an Instagram follow of musical artist Dwan Hill. He was playing piano for a live Christmas concert that I attended back in December of 2017. I wasn’t even supposed to be there that night. I repeat, I wasn’t even supposed to be there! I’d bought two tickets for the concert but my date bailed on me at the last minute. I begrudgingly decided to attend the concert solo.

Solo??!!

Yep, solo.

At the end of the show, when the band was being introduced Dwan’s name stood out and I felt the urge to find out more about him. I was confused. I like music but not that much to be keep track of a musician. I mean it felt kinda creepy even for me lol. But nevertheless, I looked him on what? —— the infamous Instagram App.

I now know that the still small voice that urged me to find out more about Dwan Hill and urged me to click “follow” on his Instagram page was a nudge from the Holy Spirit.

It wasn’t long after that I saw his IG posts about Nashville Life Music. I instantly took a liking to their music. I mean the album was on repeat all day, errrrday lol. “What a cool Christian music group”, I thought. “I think one day, I may try to see them perform”, I said to myself lol.

But one day I noticed that not only had he put #NashvilleLifeMusic in the caption of a posted photo but also #NashvilleLifeChurch.

*insert record scratch

Huh?

What?

There’s a Nashville Life Church? Indeed, there was and after having searched unsuccessfully for a church home for 3 years while living in Nashville, I thought it would be good to visit said Nashville Life Church.

One visit turned into two visits, two visits turned into three…. and so forth. Next thing you know, I’m a member attending classes and small group meetings, and serving. Ha! Go figure.

Literally, a hashtag turned into my new church home.

Me and my sis, Se’Bon! She was literally the first person I met at church and she welcomed me with open arms.

I’m not writing this to brag about my church— although it is pretty awesome (lol). I’m writing this to remind you to always have an open mind and an open heart.

What if I had never listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit when it urged me to learn more about Dwan? What If I hadn’t been attentive to the signs God was placing right in front of me? What if I thought it was silly to go visit a church based on an IG post? What if?

A simple click of an Instagram follow button directed by footsteps toward what would set off a divine chain of events.

Even though social media is a pretty neutral system— a way to connect with others, at times we see it as a bad thing. Isn’t it amazing how Satan can twist anything and make it appear wicked?  He uses tools everyday to advance his dark agenda. However, we as Christians can use tools to advance God’s kingdom as well. Ain’t that good news?

As my dear friend, Ayanna reminds me often “We (Christians) are called to be light not just in lit places—but in all places—- even places we think to be dark”.

Maybe you won’t find your new church on Instagram like me (maybe you will lol). Whether you do or you don’t, I challenge you to have a more open mind and heart to the tools we as Christians have available to us. Let’s be innovative in our efforts to reach more souls and guide them towards Jesus Christ. We are tasked with the Great Commission!

  2. I love this- what a way to find your church!!! But it makes total sense in this day and is a great reminder of the power of social media. Opens my eyes (and my heart) to all the good God can do through it!
