Why We Need to BE STILL

“Be still and know that I am God” —-Psalm 46:10

Stillness was never something I had a problem with as a child. My mom can even tell you I was a pretty calm baby. Curious, but never too busy. Even in the toddler stage, I hardly ever got yelled at or told to BE STILL.

But something happened as I transitioned from childhood to adulthood. I began to feel the need to be busy— to be doing things literally all the time.

Each year this urge grew bigger and more intense. I “had” to be working on stuff. I “needed” to be planning, making, creating, doing. I felt as though if I wasn’t I was letting people down; or even scarier I might be letting God down. *insert sheer panic here.

Why We Need to Learn to Be Still

This feeling—- of always needing to be doing STUFF overtook me so much that at times my physical health began to suffer. A few months ago was one of those times. It was as if everything in my body began to go awry. A new symptom almost everyday was emerging. Not to mention, I was so busy doing stuff that I wasn’t properly engaging in good diet and exercise.

So with this fear I had— the fear that by not being busy enough or not doing enough stuff I was letting God down or letting others down— essentially, I was LETTING MYSELF DOWN. Letting my physical health down. Letting my mental health down. Letting my SPIRITUAL health down.

In Matthew Chapter 8 we read about Jesus resting, BEING STILL, during an actual storm.

“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake and the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping” Matthew 8:24

Even in the midst of chaos and dysfunction, Jesus was able to be still.

In Genesis 2, we read that God Himself, our Almighty Father—- did what? RESTED.

“By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work” —Genesis 2:2

Let me ask you this? If both God and Jesus, with all their responsibilities and power found time to rest, why can’t we? Why is it so hard to allow ourselves to just BE STILL?

I wish to share more of my story and journey with you all in future blog posts. I don’t think that things we go through are only for ourselves. We go through them so that we can empathize and help others with similar challenges and circumstances. So stay tuned as I reveal a little bit more of myself through my posts.

Until then, remember you are a human BEING— not just a human DOING. Leave some of the tasks on your to do list “undone” before you yourself become “undone”. God still loves you. He always has and always will.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” —- Jeremiah 1:5

God loves you despite of the things you do and the things you don’t do……. So don’t be afraid to BE STILL.

Psalm 46:10- “Be still and know that I am God”

  2. BIGGEST TAKEAWAY: Human being > Human Doing!!! I struggle with this so much and this post is much needed. God already wrote me a spiritual ticket for rushing, going, and doing TOO MUCH when all I had was to BE STILL!!! LOVE IT

      1. Yes indeed. Tipping the scale of burnout is so easy. Our burnout leads to discouragement which then leads to distraction from our destiny. We’ll get it right. I’m so thankful God is patient and gracious with us lol

  3. Great post! I think we get so busy because society expects us to always be doing something.and going somewhere. But we really need to take the time to rest physical, spiritually and emotionally.
